Nomination Form 2001 Hall of Fame Kenneth L. Payne - Kenneth L Payne has had a distinguished career in education in Indiana that has spanned four decades. His experience included six years as a teacher, five years as a principal and twenty-nine years as a superintendent. He retired in July, 2000, after serving as superintendent of Duneland School Corporation (Cherterton, IN) for twelve years. While at Duneland he was name Superintendent of the Year in 1999. Prior to accepting the assignment in Chesterton, he served as superintendent of the Plymouth Community Schools for thirteen years and Adams Central Schools (Monroe, IN) for four years. As a school superintendent, he has provided the leadership for seven major school construction projects. The most recent was the construction of the $78 million Chesterton High School. Ken enrolled in Ball Sate in 1956 following graduation from Chester Center High School (Wells County). He was initiated into the Indiana Gamma chapter on January 26, 1958 and served as chapter comptroller for one and a half years. After earning his bachelors degree in 1960, he also earned a masters degree (1965), Superintendents Certificate (1968), and Doctorate of Education (1987) from Ball State University. He has continued to serve Call State as an active alumnus and is past president of the Teachers College Alumni Association. He has been active in numerous community organizations in each location he has lived. His community service activities include Kiwanis International, United Way and the Chamber of Commerce. Professionally, he has been active in American Association and Indiana Association of School Superintendents, Phi Delta Kappa, and the Indiana School Boards Association. Ken is married to Brenda (Coe), also a BSU alumnus. They have two sons, Greg and Geoff and five grandchildren Robert G. Reed - Robert G Reed is currently semi-retired, but continues to practice cardiology at Daviess County Hospital in Owensboro, Kentucky. His responsibilities at the hospital, in addition to the cardiology practice the past several years have included Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine, Chairman of Cardiac Services and membership on the Hospital Executive Committee. While residing in Owensboro, Bob has been involved with the American Heart Association, The Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, of which he is president-elect and the Green River Heart Institute. Prior to his practice in Owensboro he practiced internal medicine and cardiology at Community Hospital Indianapolis where he also served as Chief of Internal Medicine. Bob graduated from Ball State with a BS degree in 1959 with a double major in chemistry and mathematics. He was initiated into Indiana Gamma on October 21, 1956 and was active in many chapter activities including the office of chaplain. His activities at BSU included earning three letters in swimming, coeditor of the yearbook and president of the B Club. Following graduation he taught mathematics in East Chicago for two years before moving to Bloomington to teach chemistry at the IU Laboratory School and being work on his masters degree in organic chemistry (1964) and his medical degree, which he completed in 1965. He served in the United States Air Force through 1969 including the position of Chief of Medicine Resident at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio, 1968-69. He returned to Indiana University Hospitals and served as Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine Resident in 1971. In addition, he later served as Clinical Professor of Medicine at the IU School of Medicine for three years. Bob was admitted as a Fellow of the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1972 and as a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology in 1980. He and his spouse, Carlene, enjoy grandchildren, digital photography, astronomy, boating and sailing, and traveling among their many activities. Gregory A. Schenkel - Gregory A. Schenkel enrolled in Ball State University in 1966, following his graduation from Huntington North High School. He was initiated into Indiana Gamma on February 4, 1968 and graduated from Ball State in 1970 with a BS degree in political science. Greg began a political career following graduation which has covered three decades including work in state government, various Indiana statewide campaigns, and lobbying at the state and federal levels. In 1972 he began his career with the Indiana Secretary of State and joined McComb and Associates, Inc. (trade association management firm) in 1974 as vice president. He joined the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce in 1976 as Vice President for Government Affairs and from 1979 to 1982 he was a member of the Public Affairs Department at Public Service Indiana (PSI Energy). He served as First Vice President of Government and Corporate Affairs for Indiana National Corporate and First Chicago NBD Corporation between 1982 and 1994 prior to the establishment of Pearson Schenkel Public Affairs, of which he was president and principal owner. In October, 2000, Greg became President of the Indiana Gas Association which provides government relations and public affairs service for the major gas utilities in the state. He is also involved in many civic and professional activities including Mental Health Association of Marion County, Greater Indianapolis progress Committee, United Way of Central Indiana, Central Indiana Council on Aging, Indiana fiscal Policy Institute, and Indiana Literacy Foundation. He has contributed significant time to Ball State University as a member of the Board of Trustees since 1990 and a member of the BSU Foundation Board of Directors since 1996. Greg is married to Claudia (Petranoff), who is a teacher in the Indianapolis Public Schools. Their daughter Laura is a freshman at Ball State. |
